Inside Conexus Craftworks: Timeless Craft, Modern Touch

Ever wondered what goes behind the custom features that makes your new office space extra special, from awe-inspiring ceiling details to unique communal tables that spark conversations? Get into the heart of the action and discover more about the people and artistry behind Conexus Craftsworks, our in-house carpentry studio located in Singapore.

Meet Michael, our factory director and friendly studio advisor.

Having spent his entire life mastering the craft, his passion for carpentry has withstood the test of time. Most of all, he relishes the thrill of problem-solving that comes along with it. “I’ll take those projects that others find too difficult to do because I enjoy the challenge,” Michael reminisced about his initial years in the trade with a chuckle.

“The joy in crafting carpentry works goes beyond the finished products. I’m fueled by the unique challenges and possibilities of each project. No two projects are the same, which keeps things fresh and exciting! The more complex the design, the greater the satisfaction when it all culminates in beautiful, functional pieces that make the office more vibrant and lively.”

Designing and Building with Intention

Rooted in purpose, each part of the process is carefully considered, from the choice of materials to the techniques used. Delving deep into our clients’ needs and aspirations, we design memorable pieces that meld form with function, helping companies to cement their brand identity while achieving functional goals.

Though collaborative discussions between our designers and craftsmen, our team carefully balance style and functionality, weighing both aesthetic and practical considerations to ensure an optimal office renovation for our clients.

Consciously crafted with both people and the environment in mind, all our carpentry works are created using eco-friendly materials such as E1 grade plywood and formaldehyde-free glue, which offer more than 50% reduction in formaldehyde and total volatile organic compound (VOC) levels as compared to conventional materials, for a greener, healthier office experience.

Keeping it fresh: Certified to be safe for indoor use, E1 grade wood products emit minimal levels of formaldehyde, significantly reducing the health risks from formaldehyde exposure.

Pro-tip: Selecting finishes for custom office furniture? Consider how frequently they will be used. For high-traffic areas like reception counters or pantry tables, opt for scratch-resistant laminates to keep furniture looking fresh over time. Spray paint is more susceptible to scratches but offers a seamless, joint-free look—perfect for low-touch surfaces.

Pushing the Boundaries of Wood

Just like how pieces of wood come together to form the final works, the connection between our craftsmen and their materials strengthens with greater experience and knowledge of their intrinsic properties. “While plywood offers versatile possibilities, it also presents technical challenges especially for projects involving complex curves,” said Wei Jiun.

“There are natural limitations to how much wood can bend. To overcome them, we typically create several prototypes for experimentation, where we explore ways to optimise the design without compromising on durability, to avoid future breakage. Once we’ve nailed down the ideal approach, our team will proceed to craft the bespoke joinery works.”
— Lee Wei Jiun, Master Craftsman, Conexus Craftworks

Time-honoured craft: The art of carpentry interweaves skill, precision and a deep mastery of materials, strengthened through years of experience.

Pursuing Greater Innovation

Having our own in-house carpentry studio enables both our design and carpentry teams to swiftly collaborate and nimbly adapt, streamlining the process from conceptualisation to production. It also allows us to explore more complex and intricate designs that require a significant amount of skill and time. “Everyone brings something to the table with their specialised skills, deep expertise and invaluable experience,” said Glen.

“We love to get ideas off the drawing board and bring them to life by banding together to come up with fresh approaches and innovative solutions. From experience, we can determine if the complexity of the design affects the structural stability of the furnishings. Our team will advise on tweaks or alternative materials for optimal results, ensuring that your custom furniture not only look great but are also durable enough to withstand frequent use over time.”

Challenge accepted: Our team is constantly on a quest to take the craft to new heights, joining forces to develop the best approach for each custom project.

Prioritising Impeccable Quality

At Conexus Craftworks, we believe that true beauty comes from within.

We are deeply passionate about getting the details right—every piece is crafted with heart, soul and calculated precision. This dedication continues through to the on-site installation phase, where our team painstakingly matches wood grains to achieve a seamless look for your brand-new office.

All in the details: We pride ourselves on quality workmanship for our bespoke joinery works, which are crafted with immense care and precision.

“Curved carpentry works are highly sought after as they add visual interest and organic flow to the modern office,” said Paul.

“Beneath each piece of furniture lies an intricate wooden framework. To achieve smooth curves, our team meticulously cut and assemble each piece making up its support structure by hand, using traditional joinery techniques paired with quality materials for precise joints and a perfect finish.”
