Spanning 42,174 sqft across two levels in Labrador Tower, the connected offices of AET and MISC Group redefines the modern workplace, blending maritime heritage with a vision for a greener, collaborative future. As global leaders in maritime shipping and energy transportation, AET and MISC Group envisioned an office that reflects their legacy while embracing a greener future. Conexus Studio’s winning design stood out in a competitive pitch process, translating this vision into a dynamic and experiential space that pushes the boundaries of conventional office design.
Anchored in the maritime industry's connection to the sea and the symbolic guidance of a lighthouse, the design embodies future-ready flexibility while reflecting the companies' commitment to sustainability and progress. Inspired by tankers and tides, the design flows with wave-like curves and sculptural nautical forms—blending function with storytelling to unite onshore and onboard teams in one seamless space.
Waves of Welcome, Anchors of Identity
The reception invites visitors on a maritime journey. A striking ceiling feature, inspired by a lighthouse beacon, casts a warm glow over the reception counter, guiding visitors in. The designs on the TV wall evoke the rhythm of the tides, while a towering shelf, shaped like a majestic tanker, commands attention. Rows of spotlit award plaques nestle within its curves, celebrating the company’s successes. Right beside is a meticulously designed boardroom that is inspired by a ship’s hull, seamlessly integrated with cutting-edge audiovisual technology and the sleek, rounded contours of a tanker, it ensures a refined space for strategic collaboration.
Smooth, flowing shapes continue throughout the reception, eschewing angular edges to evoke unity and movement. A vibrant colour palette of timeless neutrals, paired with metallic accents, striking orange and oceanic blues, enriches the design, infusing the space with warmth and personality. Floor-to-ceiling windows offer breathtaking views of the harbour and sea, reflecting the brand’s far-reaching vision while ensuring a welcoming environment that prioritises wellbeing.
Flowing Forms, Designed for Now and the Future
Replacing a 15-year-old workspace, the new office introduces a vibrant, contemporary environment tailored to meet the evolving needs of its growing team. At its heart lies an agile breakout area, equipped with different seating options to accommodate diverse needs. A bespoke tiered seating arrangement curves gently towards the uninterrupted views of the water and an oversized TV screen, ensuring ample seating for company-wide events.
The ceiling, with its reflective metallic sheen, references ocean waves, while an asymmetrical carpentry and lighting design adds a subtle dynamism, lending a relaxed, café-like atmosphere that allows users to connect in a laid-back, inviting setting. Behind the seating, a dedicated history wall stands as tribute to the company's milestones, honouring its journey over the years.
Whirls of Connection, Inspiring Productivity
A striking spiral staircase links the 26th and 27th floors, connecting AET and MISC Group’s receptions and serving as a sculptural centrepiece. Its captivating swirl mirrors the flow of a whirlpool, fostering interaction and collaboration between teams across the two levels. This ‘Whirl’ of activity is also captured in the dynamic meeting rooms, adaptable training rooms and the reception area, expressing the energy of swirling currents to inspire creativity and meaningful conversations.
Other social zones such as the pantry, break out area and collaboration spaces embody the ‘Ripple’ effect, encouraging organic interactions that cascade across the organization, deepening bonds and strengthening relationships. Tying it all together, a textured blue carpet trail—reminiscent of flowing ocean currents—guides users seamlessly through the ergonomic back office area, supporting a healthy ‘Flow’ into focus and productivity.
Sustainable Design, Powered by Purpose
The design embodies the brand’s sustainability aspirations, integrating ESG principles to create a future-ready, resilient workspace. From Green Mark-certified, low-emitting materials to bespoke furnishings crafted from recycled plastic, the design details champion both durability and the circular economy. The smart lighting system is woven into the design seamlessly, adjusting to natural light and occupancy to optimise energy use. Workstations are strategically placed by floor-to-ceiling windows, maximising natural light while offering breathtaking views.
“Conexus Studio is proud to have worked with AET and MISC on this transformative project. Their openness to exploring creative ideas was instrumental in fostering a truly collaborative and productive journey. Given the compressed timeline, intricate curves in the carpentry, and expansive two-story space, this project posed an exciting challenge for our design and build expertise. AET and MISC’s inspiring new headquarters stands as a benchmark for the high-quality, transformative workplaces we are excited to create with our clients.”
